On many doors a single dented section can be replaced instead of the whole door, at a fraction of the cost. Whether that is possible comes down to three things: the manufacturer, whether the panel design and colour are still made, and whether the damage is really confined to one section. A door from a line that has been discontinued may have no matching section available at any price. This is the question we answer first, and being an authorized dealer for five brands is what makes it answerable: we can look the door up against the original order rather than guessing from a photo. 2. **Does the colour still exist, and will it match?** Factory colours get discontinued, and even a current colour on a new section will not perfectly match a door that has been on a south-facing wall for twelve years. On a lower section this is often invisible. On a middle section beside two faded ones it can be obvious. 3. **Is the damage really only in that section?** An impact hard enough to buckle a panel usually also bends a hinge, tweaks a roller bracket, or racks the track. Replacing the section without fixing what it took with it means a door that binds. ## When a single section is the right call ### Bottom section dented by a vehicle The most common case by a distance, and the most likely to be repairable. The bottom section takes the hit, and it is the one section where a slight colour difference is least visible. ### One section rusted through along the bottom Road salt and standing water eat the bottom section from the inside. If the rest of the door is sound, replacing that section buys years. ### Hail or debris damage to one panel Cosmetic denting confined to one section, with the hardware intact. ### A cracked window insert On many doors the glazing is integrated into the section rather than removable. DASMA notes that garage door glazing is usually built into the door and not intended to be individually removed, so a cracked window can mean a section swap. Checked 31 August 2026. ## When we will tell you to replace the door - **Two or more sections are damaged.** At that point the cost of sections plus labour approaches a new door, and you are putting new panels on old track and old springs. - **The door line is discontinued.** A mismatched section on the front of a house is a permanent reminder of the repair. - **The rest of the door is at the end of its life.** If the springs are original, the rollers are shot and the bottom is rusting, one new section is money spent on a door that is going anyway. - **The impact damaged the track and jambs.** Sometimes the honest answer is that the opening needs work before any door goes back in it. ## Weight, and the thing people forget A replacement section is not always the same weight as the one that came off, particularly where an uninsulated section is replaced with the current insulated equivalent. DASMA is explicit that adding weight to a door beyond the manufacturer's specification can shorten the cycle life of the door assembly and the opener, and can create a safety issue with manual operation. If the weight changes materially, the springs have to be re-rated with it. Checked 31 August 2026. ## Do not fix it with a generic panel Sections are not interchangeable between manufacturers, and the end stiles, hinge locations and thickness all have to match the rest of the door. DASMA publishes guidance on component substitution because a door is a system: a part that looks similar changes how the rest of the assembly behaves. ## Insurance If a vehicle caused the damage, this is often a claim. What an adjuster generally wants is a written quote that itemises the section, the hardware and the labour, and a note on whether a matching section is available. We write quotes in that form as a matter of course, so it can be handed straight to an insurer. ## What we do while you decide A dented door that still runs is not necessarily safe to keep running: a buckled section puts uneven load into the hinges and the track. We will tell you whether it is safe to operate in the meantime, and if it is not, we will say so plainly. ### Send us the door A photo of the whole door, a photo of the damage, and a photo of any label inside the door tells us most of what we need.
