Garage door repair and installation in Burlington
Burlington is mostly attached two-car garages, which changes what matters. When the garage shares a wall and often a ceiling with the house, door noise and insulation stop being cosmetic. The attached-garage problem: noise
The complaint we hear most in Burlington is not that the door is broken, it is that it is loud, and there is a bedroom or a home office on the other side of the wall. Most of that noise is mechanical rather than structural: unsealed steel or plastic rollers, dry hinges, a chain drive resonating through the rail, and a loose rail hung directly off framing that transmits vibration into the house.
The fixes are unglamorous and effective, in rough order of value: nylon rollers on sealed bearings, proper lubrication of hinges and bearings, tightening the rail mount and isolating it, and where the unit is old, a belt-drive opener with a DC motor. It is worth knowing that a door's laboratory sound rating is not a great predictor here. DASMA notes that the STC rating is calculated for speech, radio and television sources and is not appropriate for other kinds of noise, and that the outdoor-to-indoor rating, OITC, "is thus more applicable to garage doors than the STC rating".

Where there is a room over the garage, the garage ceiling is that room's floor, and an insulated door earns its money. Where the garage is unheated and the walls are bare, a higher R-value door mostly buys a quieter, stiffer door. Both are good reasons to buy one, and they are different reasons. Because the numbers on the brochure are widely misunderstood, and because DASMA states that a calculated section R-value and a tested assembly U-factor "are not comparable to each other", it is worth reading our R-value guide before comparing quotes.

A lot of Burlington housing stock is now old enough to be on its second or third garage door, which brings up a specific trap: the replacement door is usually heavier than the original, and the springs have to be sized for the new weight. If a previous installer reused the existing springs on a heavier insulated door, the door will feel fine for a while and then start eating openers.

Burlington's position is that all construction related to a building or structure requires a permit under the Building Code Act except in specific cases, and its list of exceptions includes, in its own words:

Burlington also exempts accessory detached buildings for a house, including garages and carports, no higher than one storey, under 15 square metres (161 square feet), with no plumbing. Making a garage door opening bigger is a different matter and is structural work.
