Most of what is written online about garage doors exists to make a phone ring. The numbers get rounded until they are wrong, the safety advice gets softened until it is dangerous, and nobody says where anything came from.
These pages are the opposite arrangement. Where there is a real standard, we quote it and link the PDF. Where a municipality publishes its own rule, we quote that municipality rather than generalising across Ontario, because the rules genuinely differ between Hamilton, Burlington and Grimsby. Where something is unknowable without seeing the door, we say that instead of inventing a price band.
Where the facts come from
- DASMA, the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association, publishes free technical data sheets covering spring cycle life, thermal values, photoelectric sensor placement, condensation, water infiltration and inspection procedure. These are the documents door manufacturers themselves work to.
- ANSI/CAN/UL 325 is the standard residential garage door operators are listed to in Canada and the United States. It is what makes an opener reverse.
- The National Building Code of Canada sets the flame-spread and smoke-development limits for the foam insulation inside an insulated door.
- Each municipality publishes its own list of work that does and does not require a building permit. We quote the city, not a summary of the city.
- Manufacturers publish cycle ratings, sizes and specifications for the doors and openers we actually install.
What we will not put on these pages
No invented prices. No fake urgency. No "average cost in Ontario" figure pulled from an American article. If you want a number for your door, the honest way to get one is a look at the door, and that is a phone call.
